Active Delivery Certification Program Description

Research shows the following course elements result in greater motivation and retention and completion for students in eLearning courses:

Learning activities that are actively designed and delivered
Inclusive and dynamic learning communities
Productive relationships between learners and instructors

This 5-workshop series aims for these results by assessing determinants of presence and related instructor roles, planning and developing formative feedback focused on student achievement of learning objectives, and evaluating and applying universally-designed, equity-minded, and culturally-responsive Active Delivery strategies.

This certification is the accomplishment of the following workshops ($500 stipend for completion)

eL303: Presence in the Phases of a Course
eL304: Active Delivery Strategies
eL305: Active Delivery and Scaffolding

There is ample research, as well as popular opinion, indicating that online courses struggle with students staying motivated for the duration of the course and may drop or stop participating in the course.

At Clark College, we have a united commitment to provide quality learning experiences in all modalities for all of our students. Demonstrated in both our Strategic Plan and our Academic Plan (specifically Goals 3 & 4 & 5), we focus on improving student preparedness for learning, developing learning spaces (both physical and virtual) that engage and inspire all learners, and integrate active learning strategies across our classroom modalities. At the state level, student achievement and completion is a critical initiative for the technical and community colleges.

This workshop strives to provide teaching strategies and processes that can be applied to your course design and online teaching practices, specifically addressing both motivation and retention for learners. To that end, the following learning objectives are key to the Active Delivery certification:

Set up and design at least one online course in the Canvas LMS that accomplishes the following:
1. includes measurable learning objectives;
2. attends to relevant student population using motivation and engagement strategies;
3. implements a present instructional style using Active Delivery; and
4. incorporates discipline-specific instructional materials, learning activities, and assessments.
Design and demonstrate the implementation of a Community of Inquiry (CoI) within the same online course through the effective use of instructional technology and the facilitation of collaborative and active learning behaviors, such as:
1. be involved
2. appear active
3. stay connected
4. communicate regularly
5. use an approachable tone
Implement technology to build effective learning strategies, such as:
1. deliver scaffolded learning
2. explain the nature of the substantive and regular feedback that you will provide
3. use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to meet the needs of the learner
4. identify how student success and completion will be tracked and reported
