Join English Professor Lisa Bullard and longtime educator, scholar, and writer Dr. Julie Bullard for a morning of active learning and fun! Their workshop on learning stations in college classrooms will run from 10 am to noon, and lunch will be served from noon to 1 pm. The date is October 4, and the location is Gaiser Hall 205.

Please bring your laptop if possible. The Teaching and Learning Center will have a few loaners on hand if you need one.

Come ready to discover “Learning Stations” through a short lecture and hands-on activities facilitated by the dynamic mother-daughter duo, Julie and Lisa Bullard. They will share this innovative teaching technique that engages students, encourages learner choice, provides for active learning, and meets the needs of diverse learners. Learning stations provide a multitude of activities for students to choose from that are organized around a topic or outcome. Participants will have an opportunity to experience Learning Stations themselves, as a method of thinking through how this strategy could be implemented in their own courses. Learning Stations can be done in-person and remotely, and we will show attendees how. This concept is simple to build into a Canvas course, and once built, it requires little from the instructor while providing active learning for the students. Any subject could utilize this tool. Our hope is that participants will leave the workshop inspired and empowered to create their own Learning Stations for their courses, perhaps leaving with some of the planning started.

About Your Facilitators

Julie Bullard is a retired early childhood professor who taught higher education courses for over 30 years. She has been recognized for her innovative teaching methods through two national awards: The 2011 Carnegie Professor of the Year for Montana and the 2015 National Early Childhood Educator of the Year by the National Association for the Teachers of Early Childhood Education. One of these innovative teaching techniques was using adult learning stations. Julie has used adult learning stations in courses and workshops for over 25 years and has conducted workshops and written an article on their use. She is the author of two textbooks, Creating Curriculum in Early Childhood: Enhancing Learning Through Backward Design and Creating Environments for Learning: Birth to Age Eight. Creating Environments for Learning has been translated into several languages and is currently used throughout the world. Julie received her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with an elementary and early childhood emphasis from Montana State University.

Lisa Bullard works here at Clark as an English Professor and tutor for The Veteran's Center of Excellence. Over the past 12 years, Lisa has also taught a variety of English courses at Montana State University, University of Montana-Western, SUNY Ulster Community College, and WA State University Vancouver. She recently received the Connie Broughton Innovation in eLearning Award for her online Learning Stations. Lisa’s drive for social justice informs her pedagogical choices, some of which include seeking out learner-centered and participatory strategies, nurturing joy in learning and community, and using labor-based grading. Outside of work, she enjoys watching SNL skits and other funny things, snowboarding, sailing, gardening, and spending time with her friends and family (which includes a beloved dog, Benji).
